As part of efforts to develop students’ imagination, creativity, and understanding of architectural heritage, fourth-year students (8th semester) in PUA’s Architectural Engineering Department embarked on a field visit to Al-Muizz Street and Beit Yakan in Cairo. The visit aimed to deepen students’ appreciation of the historical and architectural significance of these iconic heritage sites, while linking theoretical knowledge to practical application.
During the tour, students explored historical buildings and engaged in discussions about development and restoration processes, emphasizing the importance of preserving architectural identity. A specialized tour guide provided detailed insights into the rich history of Al-Muizz Street and Beit Yakan, both of which have undergone recent restoration efforts to maintain their cultural and heritage value. Students also had the opportunity to examine how social and cultural factors influence architectural development and to discuss the challenges faced in restoration projects.
This visit is an integral part of the EA412-Architectural Design 6 course, designed to enhance students’ understanding of heritage architecture and its integration into modern design practices. By studying these historical sites, students gained valuable inspiration for their own projects, learning how to balance tradition and innovation in contemporary architectural design.
