In alignment with presidential directives on human development and in support of the “New Beginning for Human Building” initiative, PUA, in collaboration with Alexandria Electricity Distribution Company, organized a seminar titled “Environment and Human – PUA as an Environmentally Friendly University.” The event aimed to raise awareness of sustainable energy practices and promote environmental responsibility within the university community.
Eng. Donia Omar opened the seminar by emphasizing the essential role of electrical energy in daily life, as it powers indispensable appliances like refrigerators and computers. She highlighted several ways to conserve energy, such as replacing traditional bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs, which significantly reduce consumption. She also encouraged attendees to make use of natural sunlight during the day, turn off lights in empty rooms, and use energy-saving LED screens that consume up to 90% less energy than conventional screens. Additionally, Eng. Donia recommended disconnecting devices, such as phone chargers, from outlets when not in use, as they can continue to draw around 10% of their energy even when idle.
Eng. Shahira Ahmed further emphasized the impact of small adjustments on energy savings. She advised setting air conditioners to 25° to maintain comfort while reducing electricity usage. Other recommendations included replacing old appliances with energy-efficient models, using microwaves instead of electric ovens for quick heating, minimizing the frequency of refrigerator door openings to save around 15% in energy, and avoiding unnecessary use of the water heater, particularly in the summer. Ahmed also suggested filling electric kettles only with the amount of water needed to reduce excess consumption.
Through this initiative, PUA seeks to promote electricity conservation, resource preservation, and cost-saving measures, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability and its role as an environmentally friendly institution.
