A Visit to the Traditional Crafts Center

Students from PUA’s Architectural Engineering Department conducted a field visit to the Traditional Crafts Center in Fustat, Cairo, as part of the EA 311 – Architectural Design Level (3) course. The visit was supervised by Dr. Doaa El-Beheiry and Eng. Basant Afifi.

Upon their arrival, the students were warmly welcomed by Mr. Haitham Hedaya, who provided a comprehensive tour of the center’s facilities, including workshops, storage areas, classrooms, exhibition spaces, administration offices, and control and electricity rooms. Mr. Hedaya also familiarized the students with various traditional crafts such as pottery, carpentry, seashells, copper, textiles, and wood carving, detailing the process of each craft, the spatial requirements, and the machinery and equipment necessary for production.

The visit also included a tour of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC), celebrated for its exemplary museum design and cultural significance, making it one of Cairo’s most important landmarks. The experience provided the students with valuable insights into functional architectural spaces, traditional craftsmanship, and cultural heritage preservation.
