A Scientific Visit to the Children’s Cancer Hospital

PUA’s Faculty of Pharmacy is committed to enhancing students’ practical skills and bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application through modern teaching and learning methods. As part of this vision, the faculty organized a scientific visit for fourth-year Pharm-D Clinical program students to the Children’s Cancer Hospital in New Borg El Arab City, as part of the Hospital Pharmacy course activities.

The visit aimed to familiarize students with the pharmacist’s critical role in oncology care and provide hands-on experience in applying their academic knowledge. The day began with an introductory lecture by Dr. Rami Khadrawi, Head of the Clinical Pharmacy Department at the hospital, who outlined the hospital’s capabilities and diverse departments. He emphasized the preparation of intravenous cancer medications and highlighted essential safety protocols.

Following this, Dr. Ahmed Salah, a clinical pharmacist at the hospital, delivered a lecture on effective communication and care strategies for pediatric cancer patients and their families. The students then participated in a field tour of the hospital, exploring key areas such as preparation and storage facilities for intravenous solutions, the drug dispensing pharmacy, the intensive care unit, patient wards, and recreational spaces for children.

This interactive visit provided students with valuable insights into professional pharmacy practices, while their interaction with both pharmacists and child patients added a meaningful human dimension to their learning experience.

To conclude the activity, the students prepared and presented comprehensive reports during practical sessions, showcasing their understanding and reflections on the visit. This initiative not only enriched their educational journey but also served as a stepping stone toward equipping them for professional roles in healthcare, making it a significant addition to their academic and practical development.
