Within the efforts of linking the theoretical and the practical sides of the study in the Architectural Engineering Department, a field visit was organized to The Grand Hotel for the Department’s 9th semester students as part of EA 553 – interior design course.

The visit was supervised by the course lecturer, Dr. Taghreed Ahmed, along with a group of teaching assistants, namely Eng. Esraa Al-Dalal, Eng. Ola Salam, Eng. Esraa Al-Sayed, and Eng. Rana Hussein.

The students took the measurements of the space of the reception area, the restaurant, and the cafeteria, and used these measurements to form a plan (horizontal projection). Then, this plan is used in the project presented to the students, which is to re-design the interior of the space referred to in the Hotel.

Taking the measurements is a highly important step as it is the first important step taken in the interior design stages of any project. It also helps in raising the students’ awareness of the environment surrounding the project, and the area of the space on the ground. On the other hand, the whole experience gave the students an example of a hotel design, and allow them to experience the re-designing of its interior from an architectural viewpoint.
