Engineering Victory at the Hackathon Competition

Students from Pharos University in Alexandria (PUA) achieved a remarkable success in the Hackathon competition (Deep Tech) organized by the Electronics Research Institute in Cairo (ERI). This event continues the efforts of PUA’s Field Training Center (FTC) in facilitating connections between external institutions and PUA’s faculties. Accordingly, the FTC encouraged students from the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, to participate with projects in the competition.

A delegation from the Faculty of Engineering, specifically from the Petrochemical Department, secured second place in the competition. Prof. Dr. Mohamed Etman, Acting Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, attended the closing and award ceremony, where he accepted ERI’s shield in recognition of PUA’s positive contributions to the event. The students were honored with the second-place award for their outstanding work.

Further, students from the Faculty of Engineering submitted two innovative projects: the first focused on the “Evaluation of the Effect of Sustainable Flame Retardants on the Physical and Mechanical Properties of Polystyrene Composites and Sugarcane Residues.” While the second project addressed “An Innovative Self-Cleaning Hybrid Membrane: Innovative Nanoparticles in Removing Heavy Metals from Industrial Wastewater.”

These projects are aligned with sustainable development goals (SDGs) and Egypt’s Vision 2030, showcasing the students’ commitment to addressing pressing environmental challenges. Their innovation and excellence stood out amid strong competition from various universities across Egypt, earning them commendation from the jury. PUA congratulates the Faculty of Engineering and its talented students on this significant achievement and wishes them continued success and creativity in their future endeavors.
