Pharos University Testing and Assessment Workshop- April 8th, 2017
PUA Professional Development Unit in collaboration with the American University organised a one-day workshop entitled "Testing & Assessment". The workshop took place in Mr. Mohamed Ragab’s grand hall where around 280 English teachers, supervisors and a large number of students from Damanhur University attended the workshop.
The workshop was held on 8th April 2017, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, during which three workshops had been held. Two of PUA ELC teachers had set up the first workshop entitled " Alternative Assessment, Don't talk the talk … Walk the walk ". Their workshop focused on alternative assessment as an emerging approach in ELT that reconciles learning with assessment. The workshop demonstrates how it can be integrated in the target audience's context, and why it is practically essential for learners of all age groups.
Dr Ramy Shabara- manager of the Evaluation, Testing & Assessment at the Department, School of Continuing Education, AUC- gave the second presentation entitled " Task-based Assessment: A Step-by-Step Guideline ". His presentation described task-based assessment as a key indicator of the quality of the teaching-learning process and the amount of the language acquired accordingly by learners. He provided guidelines on its characteristics, components, task selection and development as well as rubric development.
The final workshop was run by Ms. Hanaa Soudan entitled "Integrating Critical Thinking in ELT". Ms. Soudan is an educational consultant and a teacher trainer. She talked about critical thinking describing it as a brainteaser. Her presentation highlighted how critical thinking can help minds to grow and characters to shine. Integrating CT in ELT works hand in hand with task-based learning.
By the end of the workshop, ELC's Professional Development Unit carried out a survey to know the attendees feedback. The attendees filled the survey and showed their interest to attend more workshops organized by ELC's Professional Development Unit.
